Discipleship, we need to get this.
Vision and discipleship, it pertains to all walks of life, family is where you learn about, and first practice it, which then prepares you to press out in dominion to disciple the Nations.
On the way back from a mountain trip last week the family listened to the Disney discussion cd’s from vision forum. I have mentioned these before. This time while hearing Botkin talk about Walt Disneys Victorian understanding of morality, which was apart from real biblical moorings. (Wholesome goodness will always get punked, by the shifting sand of humanism that’s its resting on) The big lesson is on how Walt had no understanding of discipleship. After his death his successors made off with his creation.
I have been reading about Westminster, the college that Machen built in the 1930’s when the liberals hijacked, what had remained of the Old Guard Christian thinking. I have talked of Machen before here.
Machen built up this college, New Westminster and had Cornelious Van Til on staff. Lead by Van Til, Westminster was an island in a sea American Relativism. Van Til tore up humanism on a presuppositional level. Machen died shortly after starting the college and could not disciple, mentor an succensor .
The college came to actively oppose the very biblical vision that started it! I can now see and am aghast at how this happened over and over and over the last couple of hundred yrs as the church took the great commission, to make disciples of every nation, and put it on a slim fast diet that became, getting people saved. As an institution the church finds itself pushing back against Christian dominion and discipling nations, its seen as interfering, with the real work of the gospel. Who’d thunk it?
As a part of modernity, the concern is about “who“ is best equipped to grow, this, or that institution, rather than who has the correct understanding of what was the primary vision.
Countless foundations, universities and institutions are now adrift,or worse, deliberatly used in manners contrary to their design, as no one at the top discipled or set in place the importance of this understanding. Proposition: We miss it at the institutional level because we missed it at the family level.
As a father, your primary calling is the discipling of your children. Not maybe, not kind of. This needs to be a burning mission, your back ground music as it were, in harmony with glorifying God. Done right, this will pass on a vision that goes beyond the family and even leaves your children’s children with an understanding of how they are a part of something that is Galatic and eternal in scope. Increasing the kingdom of God for His own glory. (Doug Phillips had a great teaching on how God makes clear, that for many key men he used, He knew, they would pass on to their children his truth, and it was a factor in their being used by him. Abraham, Noah.)
We must throw away, discard, the Amercana lie about how “they” must decide. Our kids had no choice over being born, or when, or to what mom, or dad, or what their moms and dads strengths and weakness’s would be, or the historical family heritage it is a part of , or what continent, what nation, what state, what city or neighborhood, or house. They do not decide how tall they will be, hair color, facial features, big boned, male or female, basic gifting and talents, all are divinely chosen by God as creator. He does not work from our preference sheet, when he knits us together in our mother’s womb (Isaiah 44:24 )
Along with every other created thing in the universe they didn’t get to sign off about being a part of glorifying God. When thought of in this manner, the idea that they would be shot out as arrows to move in terms of Gods word is totally normal in the context of a Biblical Christian family. It’s such a crock, the idea, that “they should decide” and must be seen as incoherent as it really is. There is no neutral ground here, either you aim them, or the culture/state will do it, all the while saying, “they are making their own decisions.”
We must direct them, aim them out as arrows, as commanded by scripture, filled with purpose that is in harmony with who God has made them. No beards for our daughters, not equipped to cut their husbands off at the knees to control them, but womanly enough to pick up a rifle/handgun and help defend the family if need be.
We men cannot be tyrants as fathers but we must develop enough back bone to stand up and say no! to those ideas and worldviews that are contrary to Gods word.
We don’t let our kids make up their own minds about gravity. We instruct them on its reality as best we can. My kids are not allowed to decide for themselves if two and two is four. And so it should be with every truth we know of in life. Hopefully that’s a deep well of biblical understanding we dish out and continue to ladle out until there is no more breath in us. Be wise,surround yourself with men and families who get this!
Broadly speaking this was integral to the message of Deuteronomy, and played out in proverbs and a part of the worship of the Psalms to be pressed into our childrens understanding. The Bible is full of verses like this.
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. Psalms 127:3-4 (NKJV)
28 The children of Your servants will continue, And their descendants will be established before You." Psalms 102:28 (NKJV)
4 We will not hide them from their children, Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. 5 For He established a testimony in Jacob, And appointed a law in Israel, Which He commanded our fathers, That they should make them known to their children; 6 That the generation to come might know them, The children who would be born, That they may arise and declare them to their children, 7 That they may set their hope in God, And not forget the works of God, But keep His commandments; Psalms 78:4-7 (NKJV)
They are given to you as arrows first, for His own glory, and the aspect that they are little Americans, should be way down the list.

Enlightenment,Renaissance, Reformation,Charles finney
I keep pulling the feathers off of this chicken and underneath I keep finding more chicken. This is longer, as I was thinking about it all over Colorado…some observations from recent history and its connections to us today and a suggestion on being relevant in our world today.
Do we have a view of Christianity that is closer to Obama’s walk of personal discovery than compared to the historical record of our fore fathers? It does seem that over time Christianity has become like some interpretive trail that each believer is encouraged to find for themselves. The focus shifted from God and what his word says about Him, His creation and how we should see ourselves in it, to one of, what does the word say about how much God loves us.
During the “dark ages” Gods revealed law was higher than popes and even Kings, all had to submit to Gods Law. Never before had monarchs or rulers seen themselves as under a higher authority, for the first time their every whim and wish was not absolute law. (other than early Israel) This was an out growth of the good news of the gospel.
But with the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, Adam and Eve’s example from the garden, of being in judgment over what God has said, re-asserted itself in the form of Greek thinking.
With the Enlightenment and Renaissance, reason became the key to truth. Not Gods word. This is why liberals always swoon over these time periods and never cease to heap praise on those who push this mindset.
Otto Scott has said that if you don’t tell people what you are doing you can go a lot farther, as compared to if you come out and really say what you are doing. Try and find a school book on history that says the enlightenment and the renaissance were about casting off any restraints from God.
“ Scholasticism now asserted the sovereignty of reason, the sovereignty of the university over church and state, the modern idea of academic freedom…freedom of the school from any responsibility to God and man.” (Rushdoony’s Institutes)
The divine right of Kings and what the pope said became higher than Gods word.
“…as sovereignty began to be asserted on all sides, by the people, church, state, universities, the authority of law began to recede…”(Rushdoony’s Institutes)
Up to this time it was agreed by all that law was from God, based on his revealed word.
Peter Abelard, a church leader, in about the 1200’s really helped to get the ball rolling. He said …” a doctrine is not to be believed because God has said it, but because we are convinced by reason that it is so…” Today we are at the place where we have entire sections of the bible that are just ignored because we have reasoned that they don’t apply to us anymore.
In contrast to this, the reformers, by use of the bible, saw no area of life that was not called to be subject to Christ in the 1500-1600’s. “ …the commandments all have their origin in God, who as the sovereign lord, issues the law to govern his realm…” (Rushdoonys institutes, my emphasis)
But as I found out while reading Charles Finneys autobiography last week, during the second awakening ,1800’s, just getting people converted, to have them see their need for Christ, was what Finney would call, advancing the Kingdom of God. There was no discipleship. I’m up to about page 80 and I still don’t what to think about him. He did declare Gods holiness and a wrath that can be expected by those separated from God. But no instruction on what, to turn too, wholesome goodness? Today by and large the church still is unable to point his people towards where they should go. As a bonus we gave up Gods holiness and his wrath to come, the need to repent. Its what happens when the New Testament floats away from the foundation of the Old Testament. When the book of the law is lost.
If Gods law is dismissed than all is up for grabs, who has the best argument? Never mind arguments, how do you… feel about it? We all become Popes in our own right and woe to the pastor who feels compelled to speak Gods truth to us. The legalist.
Here is relevance. God and his word is the one unchanging constant for all peoples in any age. Line up with Gods word, and be ready in love, to speak what God has said to any situation. As His witness you will be relevant, but you might not be popular,. (2chron 18:7And Jehoshaphat said, “Is there not still a prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of Him?” 8So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is still one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the Lord; but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.”[1] ) Even believers upon hearing the law of God applied to their situation might consider it evil! God calls all of us to give up our autonomy. Gods truth from his word is the relevant factor/factors in any/every situation.
2 chron 16:9“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him….

2008 AFHE home School Convention
Only went and heard the keynote speaker today. Unfortunately he had way to much to share. The first half was standard explanation and encouragement about how those with no professional training can out do the professionals when it comes to the education of our children. This is because God said I want the parents to do it.
His second half was on world view and how instilling a biblical world view is the ultimate goal God had in mind when it comes to education. Period. He had to skip over maybe half or more of his presentation on this portion of his message. Too bad, it was going good.
This theme God is bringing to the fore front all over the place. He wants us to get it. He also knows that we "think" this is what we have been doing. But we haven’t. It is starting to sink in though.
They also showcased the new DVD Trojan Horse, which it too, had Worldview comeponants and addresses a lack of understanding when we take $$$ from the govt for home schooling purposes. We watched it tonight and Voddie B is especially impactful in his choice of scripture and words to show we must be careful. It reinforced what the keynote was about.
Other wise we spent the day carefully canvassing the armory. Some shop. We are fitting out. More ammo. You can always carry one more grenade. Put it in the stroller under Nathan. Okay,okay my wife shops and its the vendor hall. But I gear up, gimme another claymore and a 200 round battle pack of 308 rounds please. No, I dont need it gift wrapped. My daughters seem to keep being attracted to the guns and swords?!?
We kept running into those Heritage people all over.
Found out the Latter Day Saints have their own support groups.

Evangelical,I have Stopped Going to Church
Here is something to think about in light of the teaching, instruction, wisdom given from those a little further down the road from us. We will need to seek out Gods wisdom, so we can act prudently, biblically, to the miriad of weird and not so weird things that happen when sinful humans gather together in the name of Christ. May we never just give up and let things go on. May God grant us humility to always be willing to seek out help and Godly advice. When I was a boy, I spent summers visiting my grandparents in South Dakota. We attended a little white Church of Christ right in the middle of our little town. I could name every member of the congregation for you to this day, simply by picturing where everybody sat, but for reasons you'll see, I'm not going to do that. In fact, from now on out, I'll change names to protect the feelings of people still alive.....
But, at various stages, I have stopped going to church, because some human fallibility, some shortcoming in the congregation itself, has brought me up short. As a church, we belong to Jesus Christ, not to any particular person, whether he be preacher, teacher, elder, or friend.
But those preachers, teachers, elders, and friends do mean something, and when something goes awry -- when the church as a church just plain doesn't work, and when I start to feel the way I felt as a child, that some of the grownups are faking it, or taking refuge in rigidity -- then I start to feel that old uneasiness again, and find it a lot more comfortable to retreat to my Bible and my prayers and solitude.
Of late, that kind of thing has happened again, and I have stopped going to church. We'll see how long it takes for me to get that old-time feeling again. entire article

Are You Going?
We must understand and shift our thinking from, "Does this help me?", "Do I need this?" to "Does this advance the Kingdom of God," "will this help position future generations (your future generations or other families) to live for the glory of God?" We must be about making shade for others, to be stepping stones for our children's children. This goes absolutely 100% against the grain of our culture, that has even us in the church focused inwardly on ourselves, our retirements, our 401 K's....

More Email, About History
So, I'm listening to Kevin Swanson from the AFHE convention give his talk called,"The Most Serious Problem Facing Families Today." As the talk progressed it was like everything was part of a historical context, for how it use to be as compared, to how it is today.
This history thing is just so huge, because history is part of context, without context statements can be turned upside down. Understanding can be turned inside out. As Kevin went on he just got more and more passionate. It's that important. Without context the modern church has had a model of what the family should be that was in pretty good sync with the world, but it bore false witness against God's order and definition for the family. The fruit was a clue. But when your intentions are good, and you think the Bible is silent about something, because you're used to so many, many, other areas where all the other believers think every one just needs to follow the Spirit, to follow your conscience. This is where the trap is sprung because at this stage our pride kicks in just like it did for the pharasees and we just refuse to believe we could be wrong, that we might actually be opposing God. It's unthinkable. We love the Lord! (see Paul "I acted in ignorance.")
Before leaving for work I had read this portion of Proverbs with my daughters...Proverbs 1:23-33
28 "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the Lord,
30 They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke.
31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
32 For the turning away of the simple will slay them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely,
And will be secure, without fear of evil."
The only distinguishing characteristic here is that they didn't listen to God and do it His way. He doesn't mention their heart.
It's that verse 31Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
As a modern evangelical I have worn the garlic around my neck, to ward off evil you know. It's the train of thought that uses the thought and phrase "God looks at the heart, God knows the heart," which he does.
But for the first 7 yrs of my oldest daughters life I didn't institute biblical methods of child raising, I thought I was but I wasn't. The standard isn't my heart it is always God's Word. And it was getting messy even though I had the best of intentions, I wasn't being obedient. I was really full with their own fancies.and I was starting to eat the fruit of their own way,
Christian marriages have the same divorce rate as the pagans....So you have to ask yourself doesn't God see our hearts? It was after Beth and I got some biblical marriage counseling and we moved closer to obedience to God's Word that things changed for us. It wasn't that my heart had better intentions but rather I was now more obedient rather than be filled to the full with their own fancies.
I've mentioned this before that the mega churches and so much of how so many churches are organized has less to do with the Bible and more to do with what is perceived as what people want, what people will accept. I refuse to believe that their intentions are not "good" (ok, maybe some) But I do wonder if this is how God see's it, that...29 Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord,30 They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke.31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
Our God is a jealous God. Jesus was praised by God for his obedience, because he only said what the Father said and only did what he saw the Father do. And because he was obedient even unto death on the cross Phil 2:8 God then spends 3 verses praising Jesus and at verse 12 we have ... Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Now I know there is an application for how God sees our hearts and he does know our intentions. But I think we now use it like peanut butter and spread it all over everything indiscriminately. I did, mostly it allowed me to live like I wanted to.
If we look around the "church" from the world view that "God looks at the heart, God knows the heart," and we see our divorce rate, and see 80% of the kids leaving the faith, etc, etc. We scratch our heads, cause it doesn't make sense, we know we love the Lord. But if you see all this and think in terms of a world view that asks "are we being obedient? do we fear the Lord?" Hmmm...

Now I know there is an application for how God sees our hearts and he does know our intentions. But I think we now use it like peanut butter and spread it all over everything indiscriminately. I did, mostly it allowed me to live like I wanted to.
If we look around the "church" from the world view that "God looks at the heart, God knows the heart," and we see our divorce rate, and see 80% of the kids leaving the faith, etc, etc. We scratch our heads, cause it doesn't make sense, we know we love the Lord. But if you see all this and think in terms of a world view that asks "are we being obedient? do we fear the Lord?" Hmmm...

And did not choose the fear of the Lord,
30 They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke.
31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
We must take every thought captive.

We absolutely, positively, must renew fatherhood…. Or we will lose every other battle for the family.
We will lose the traditional marriage battle in the courts and the legislatures.
We will lose the abortion battle.

None But God
"Unlimited submission and obedience is due to none but God alone. He has as absolute right to command; he alone has an uncontrollable sovereignty over us, because he alone is unchangeably good. He never will nor can require of us, consistent with his nature and attributes, anything which is not fit and reasonable. His commands are all just and good.
